Our Jewelry Store Achievements

Best of Lenawee
We have been honored as Lenawee County's Best Jeweler, as voted by the readers of the Daily Telegram newspaper, seven times including 2014!

Award Winning Designers
Hacker Jewelers, Designers and Goldsmiths, as the name implies, are manufacturing jewelers, capable of creating beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces from start to finish. In recognition of the quality of these pieces, the Michigan Jewelers Association has honored them many times in conjunction with their annual design competition.

The M.J.A. Jewelry Design Contest
One of the foremost state competitions in the nation, top jewelers and designers from throughout the state vie for honors in four categories: Student, Advanced Student, Professional Goldsmith, and Designer & Manufacturer Partnership. There also is a Spectral Award, which is selected by show attendees rather than a panel of judges.

The next year, Hacker and Suydam teamed to create this ladies diamond ring. The ring features a 1 1/4 carat pear shape center diamond, and won the 1993 Spectral Award, honoring the "peoples choice" for designer of the year.

A ladies amethyst and diamond ring garnered runner-up honors in the 1998 Designer & Manufacturer Partnership Division. This ring was also created by Daniel G. Hacker and Terry Suydam. Terry Suydam again won the Spectral Award in 1999 with the hand crafted, two tone gold bracelet (seen to the right) with 2.65 carats total weight of bezel set diamonds.

More recently, we were recognized with several honors in the 2000 MJA competition. Daniel G. Hacker and Terry Suydam again won First Place in the Designer Manufacturer Partnership Division with the ladies ring seen to the left. This ring is crafted in white and rose gold and features a 1 carat white round diamond and side pink diamonds. This ring also won the Spectral Award.

In addition, a white gold and black cultured pearl necklace by staff apprentice earned runner-up honors in the Advanced Student category in the 2000 competition. Also, Suydam and Hacker were again honored with a runner-up award for a tourmaline and diamond pendant in 2001.

Be watching for news of future awards and accomplishments. These awards are evidence of the fine quality workmanship you can expect from all we do…from simple repairs to creating one-of-a-kind heirlooms. And as always, look for our registered trademark stamped on our designs: It truly is the "Trademark of Fine Award Winning Designs".

Graduate Gemologists
Daniel Hacker inspecting a diamond under a microscopeWe're proud to have two of this area's only Graduate Gemologists. Laura E. Englehart and Daniel G. Hacker have both earned their Graduate Gemologist diplomas. Further, Daniel G. Hacker is a Master Graduate Gemologist Appraiser. As of late 2009, there were less than 15 Master Graduate Gemologist Appraisers accredited by the Independent Jewelers Organization in the US. Ever wonder about exactly what a G.G. is and what it means to you? Let us explain.

A Graduate Gemologist has passed extensive formal courses in Diamonds, Colored Stones, and Gem Identification. The most recognized educator in the jewelry industry is the Gemological Institute of America, headquartered in Carlsbad, California. GIA, where both of our Graduate Gemologists trained, uses both textbook and hands-on training. The final exam for a G.G. is a 20 gemstone practical gem identification exercise, where a 100% score is necessary for passage.

In today's jewelry world, with sophisticated synthetic gemstones, fracture filled diamonds, new and ever-changing gemstone enhancements, etc., education is more important than ever. It is necessary for quality evaluations of the jewelry we buy for our inventory as well as pieces presented by our clients for appraisals and repairs.

We feel that a G.G. on staff should be the minimum level of gemological professionalism expected from any serious jewelry store. That's why we are constantly improving our knowledge through seminars, classes, and advanced journals…in order to serve you better.

As of late 2009, our store is also one of less than 100 IJO stores with an IJO Certified Gem Laboratory on site. We also have an extensive gem reference library. This means that in addition to having the knowledge, we have the tools necessary to do a proper evaluation of all of your (and our) gems in most normal circumstances.
